I ran across one of the first oil painting assignments I did in college. We had to pick a famous painter and replicate one of their pieces. I have always loved Modigliani‘s work. When I recently came across my version of this mother and child, I was reminded that it was such a wonderful exercise for a new student.

Even though it’s very different from my current style of painting and medium, it brings me joy and reminds me to continue to practice and learn. The original is in Washington DC on the left, and my painting, which is now framed and in my Zen room is on the right. The differences are obvious, but so many years later I can still see my 18 year old self finding her way.
