Let’s Kill The Starving Artist Phrase

I was out at a local office supply store this week. The young cashier was frustrated with her cash register which wasn’t functioning well. The poor thing obviously didn’t love her job and I was asking her a few questions when I noticed she had a drawing book next to her open to a cute character. When I started asking her about that, she lit up. She said her drawing was the thing that made her the happiest.
As a creative I know all too well the untrue belief that artists just don’t make money. That is what we’ve been told. But withdetermination and love of craft, art can be a valuable and profitable career.
I took just a moment to show this cashier a bit of the work I was doing, praise her talent, and gave her some suggestions and my business card. I really hope she calls me so I can continue to encourage her.
Doing what we love feels almost effortless when you’re in the moment. Have confidence in your ability to conquer your fear of failure, and of success. Encourage young artists to hone their craft and learn some business skills. Let’s kill the “starving artist” phrase.
